Volunteering Matters is delighted to be one of 70 charities selected to receive a cut of £12m from the UK Government’s Tampon Tax Fund.

The Tampon Tax Fund is designed to benefit charities that support women and girls and is equivalent to the amount HMRC estimate is raised from VAT on sanitary products.

An award of £170,673 will enable Volunteering Matters to help 300 young women with learning difficulties in Gwent, South Wales, improve their personal safety and maintain good sexual health, through the delivery of the ‘Sexual Awareness for Everyone’(SAFE) project.

Oonagh Aitken, Chief Executive of Volunteering Matters, said:

“We are absolutely thrilled to have been chosen to receive funding to deliver the SAFE project in South Wales thanks to the Tampon Tax Fund. This will enable us to improve the personal safety and sexual health of 300 young women with learning difficulties, through workshops, one-to-one peer support and the distribution of a SAFE information card.

“Learning will also be shared with the wider community in South Wales by 50 of the young women who will be trained as SAFE Champions and deliver peer support within local youth, educational and community services, ensuring as many people as possible benefit from the project.”
