We’re looking for new volunteers to become telephone befrienders in Blaenau Gwent.
There are many people who are unable to leave their homes around Blaenau Gwent, a situation only made worse by Covid-19. People can be in this position due to many factors, including age, pre-existing medical conditions, mental health issues, or more.
We need volunteers to help these people through providing a kind ear and dedicating some of their time to our telephone befriending programme. These volunteers will help people maintain contact with the outside world and provide a valuable source of friendship. A regular conversation with a friendly and familiar person can count for so much more than many of us know and can positively influence the mental health of isolated people.
What will this involve?
As a telephone befriender volunteer you’ll be calling someone who is more isolated than most in their homes on a regular to semi regular basis. This can be to check in on them, lend a friendly ear, have a conversation, get to know them, and ultimately offer a level of social interaction that they would otherwise have trouble getting.
A kind word and open ear goes a long way; you’ll be making a friend as well as someone’s day.
How do i know if i’m right for the role?
We’re looking for people who are:
- A good listener
- Reliable
- Organised
- Socially responsible
- Friendly and empathetic
