Volunteering Matters is supporting volunteers in Leeswood & Pontblyddyn  to make their community Age-Friendly. This is of Volunteering Matters Rural Wisdom  projects designed to reduce isolation in rural areas.

With funding from NEWCIS’ Dementia Project and money raised through the Age-Friendly Community Steering Group community activities, Volunteering Matters has increased awareness and understanding of dementia and developed an entertaining and informative performance for the wider community.

Volunteering Matters has supported volunteer initiatives including revamping the ‘old clinic’ in the community centre to redevelop a community space where every Thursday morning a community café is held; bringing different groups in the community together to create an intergenerational pumpkin soup activity; holding a winter celebration event for older people in the community with carvery, homemade cake and live entertainment.

Recently a local primary school, Ysgol Derwenfa, Leeswood held a Dementia Awareness concert and invited parents, friends and members of the community. The pupils performed a variety of songs which focused on friendship and understanding. The school hopes to continue holding Age & Dementia activities and is looking forward to supporting Leeswood & Pontblyddyn to become an Age & Dementia friendly Community.

Volunteering Matters Project Manager Shereen Devine, said: “We will continue to work with local shops and businesses, community, voluntary and faith groups, children and young people and transport providers to look at how we can all increase our awareness of dementia and support people with dementia and their carers to live well and continue to contribute to our communities.”
