Joan Whitehead, 70, from Bath helps children with their reading and recruits volunteers in 150 schools in the South West. She said;

“When I retired I didn’t want to sit at home. I got in touch with RSVP West, which is part of the national charity Volunteering Matters. I go to a local primary school and assist children with their reading. I asked one boy what he liked about reading and he said, ‘Finding new words’. It was so sweet

“I was asked to help find more volunteers for the scheme. I’ve met all sorts of people, from grandparents who want to read to their grandchildren, to mums and dads who want to do something together. It’s great to share all our stories and experience the pleasure in volunteering”.
